Microsoft Thinks PC Designers Are Dozing
Microsoft is unveiling details of new PCs it's designing. The
PCs--one called Mira features a detachable touch-screen display,
the other is a remote-controlled machine called Freestyle--will
recharge a tired market, Microsoft says.
Delivery of both systems is "very plausible for this year," says
group VP Jim Allchin, who's set to deliver the opening keynote at
this week's Windows Hardware Engineering conference in Seattle.
Mira would run Windows CE .Net and is being developed along with
Intel, Wyse Technology, and others. Microsoft says its design
could accommodate the swapping of displays, plugging in a
large-screen TV, for example.
Allchin calls Freestyle "remote control for the PC that works."
The Windows XP machine is designed to let users browse photos,
listen to music, and play DVDs, controlling the interface from
across the room. Microsoft wouldn't build the proposed machines,
just license the designs to original equipment manufacturers.

It's ridiculous for Microsoft to get into PC design. Or is it?
