GM Bringing 10,000 Suppliers Into Design Process

Looking to extend its collaborative-design efforts to smaller
suppliers, General Motors Corp. is adopting a new set of
technologies from system integrator EDS. During the next two
years, the world's No. 1 automaker expects to tie as many as
10,000 suppliers into EDS's new infrastructure, called E-vis 4,
which includes product life-cycle management, collaboration, and
graphics tools.

GM exec Kirk Gutmann says EDS tools will let more upper-tier
suppliers work in real time with GM designers to create and edit
3-D CAD models online using EDS's Unigraphics. GM wants second-
and third-suppliers, which aren't as involved in design as are
larger suppliers, to begin using the tools so it can take
advantage of their design skills.

The new tools run on Microsoft .Net, which allows suppliers to
collaborate on designs using PCs, rather than graphics
workstations. E-vis 4, which is aimed at auto, aerospace, and
high-tech manufacturing, is available immediately. Pricing was
not disclosed. - Steve Konicki
