What's more amusing (or worrisome?) to me is that no one is calling them
on the obvious problem with his statement. Why the hell would anyone
expect Microsoft to maintain these variations??? I mean, if I go buy a
car and replace the factory stereo with a nice third party stereo, do I
expect my warranty to cover the stereo? No. I mean, people are going
to all these lengths to report what he's saying and pointing out either
the ridiculousness of what he said, or the conspiracy theory (or
presenting what balmer said as fact). Just ask the bald moron why he
expects Microsoft would have to support everything.
Besides, there are already software models and examples (even within
Microsoft, for cripes sake) of mix and match core components... Codecs
within the media players, for example. Any database product. Plug-ins
for things like audio, video, and graphics software (think cakewalk or
photoshop). All those things have "mix and match" middle components...
I don't understand why no one is reporting that fact...
Oh, and let's not forget that every Linux distribution is essentially an
exercise in mix-and-match everything. Yet, people are still able to
write software that will install on all variations out there.
Sometimes, the simplest observations seem to escape reporters out there.
argh.
