I'm not sure I want to be in the category 2. :) Actually, I build my
own systems for a couple of reasons.

1. To get specific hardware I want. (Added a 64mb Radeon dual head video
card a while back. Before that I had a Matrox Millenium with an add-on
3d card.)

2. Can't usually find what I want in a prebuilt.

My current box has: firewire card, previously mentioned vid card, cdrw
and a cdrom, 3.5 and 5.25 floppy drive, tv/capture card, external modem,
dual nics, usb ports with an external 4 port usb minihub, a 40 gig and a
10 gig ide drive. There's bound to be something I've forgotten, but you
get the point. Then again, I didn't build this machine with all that in
there to start with. I do on occasion play games, but not that often.
(I've got quake (i,ii,ii), unreal tourny, heretic ii, descent iii, all
Linux versions of course).

3. Most of the shops around here are still Windows focused. Those that
aren't, aren't that close to me.

I didn't have to buy my radio from a specific company to listen
to FM, why doesn't that apply to the Internet (anymore...)?
