Like many things, 95% of users don't need to know them... several jobs
ago, my company used macros to automatically fill in forms in expense
reports based on a set of simple questions (what project are you working
on and is this billable to the client). It made life easier for them,
and for the end users.
I bet you most everyone in that company (and we had some really good
developers there) probably didn't know how to write a Word and/or Excel
macro.
That's why it's under the commonly used section, even though most people
may not see the macros they use.
