At the risk of starting an unpopular thread, I have an open question for
everyone...
what features do you think are necessary to have a word processor that
you would consider complete?
Here's my list (thinking off the top of my head). I've divided them
into three tiers:
Tier 1: Required
Tier 2: Common/Helpful
Tier 3: Optional
I couldn't think of a better term for Tier 2, but essentially, I mean
things that are not required but truly are useful.
Tier 1:
---------------
Stability
Fonts (sizes & faces)
Basic Formatting (justification, line spacing)
WYSIWYG
Tables
Bullets, Special Characters
Footnotes/Endnotes
Tier 2:
---------------
Outlines
TOC generation
Styles
Grammar checking
Tier 3:
---------------
Colors
Versioning/Workgroup features
internet features
What else am I missing? what changes would you make? Clearly, this
list reflects a bias on how I use word processors. It would be nice to
come up with a list of common features we look for. I would like to
then use this list to cross reference a couple of WP. it seems to me
that this monopoly is unfortunately often overlooked. I'm going to try
to track down feature comparison charts from WordPerfect and Office.
OpenOffice might have a wishlist chart as well... so I'll take a look
there.
