Sorry to be pedantic, but can you point out a citation (book, web page,
etc.)?  I looked pretty hard for a good 20 minutes (admittedly, not
exhaustive research) and only came up with the references I cited.  In
addition, one of those references was the X consortium itself (!), so
I'm not sure who else would know better.

I'm not sure I care which came first, as Windows 1.0 did very little
compared to what the X protocol did and does (even today).  In the end,
I think X users got some essential things that are still missing in
Windows and Mac OS, and Mac guys came up with something better than that
which existed in the X world (some of which still doesn't exist in
mainstream X servers).
