Depends on who you ask. Windows 1.0 came out in '85.

The X Protocol was released, depending on who you ask, in the
early-to-mid 80's (x.org says mid-80's). The question then is when was
the first working implementation released... I can't find that right
now.

Also, for those of you that don't know, XFree86 does not equal X Windows
(XFree86 is an open source implementation of X11R6, released by the
X.org group). Ah, I lied. On the home page is a quote: "Since its
first commercial release in 1986..." so there you have it. The
commercial release of X was during the year after Windows 1.0 came out.

However, to add to the complexity, Windows 1.0 was only a multitasker
(no windows could overlap, so tile based display). The first Windows
version that looks like X does was in December of 87.

See

http://www.x.org

I have the X protocol spec (parts of it) at home on my bookshelf
(required for a class in college...). I'll see if I can get a better
date out of there (copyright, maybe?).

Anyways.
