I believe there are a number of standards that are used for
(among other things) delivering audio and video over the internet.
MP3 is one example; I beleive it is a standard that was developed
by the Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG). I understand that
Microsoft created its own proprietary standard, Windows media
format, and is tying Windows Media Player to the Windows operating
system as part of its attempt to impose its proprietary audio-
video format on the internet media market in place of current
standards.
This overlaps with another issue, though: the attempts of the
large corporations in the music industry to crush MP3-file music
sharing over the internet.
