If there's one good thing you can attribute to Microsoft, that's the built 
in opselescence you get with computers these days. It means you can pick 
up a decent three or four year old computer for next to nothing because it 
is not considered to be 'up to spec' because it doesn't run the latest 
flavour of Windows. Let's all thank Bill for bringing down the cost of our 
computing.

Having said that, the cost of computing for Windows users keeps going up.

The actual proportion of the price you pay for a new computer which goes 
to Microsoft has actually gone up!

This is exactly what you would expect from a monopoly which acts in an 
anti-competitive fashion.
