AG blames Gates' attitude for Microsoft case verdict
Herald staff and wire reports
Thursday, June 15, 2000
Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly said yesterday that Microsoft
Corp. and its shareholders can blame Bill Gates for the breakup ordered
by a federal judge last week.
Reilly, who told a meeting of business leaders in Leominster yesterday
morning that he initially did not support a breakup, said the behavior and
evident attitude of Gates led him to change his view and endorse the remedy
sought by the Justice Department and 17 states.
``We are a country of laws,'' Reilly said. ``You can't have one set of laws for
Bill Gates and another set of laws for everyone else.''
Reilly disputed whether the Microsoft chairman and his firm have any
interest in reaching a compromise, out-of-court settlement sought by
prosecutors and supported by the judge in the case. Before a meaningful
settlement could be reached, Reilly said, ``there would have to be a major
change of attitude on the part of Microsoft.''
