Dear all,
Following on the tracks of the recent public launch of UK's data.gov.uk,
there are indications that the person, who as per news reports is likely
to become EC's Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, is strongly in
favour of the use of open standards by all public organizations.

The public sector should increase its use of open standards says [Neelie
Kroes,] the woman likely to take the new job at the European Commission
as Commissioner for the Digital Agenda.
...
Kroes said, "Digital society depends on open standards and
interoperability and, with this in mind, public organisations must
practice what they promote. If they don't use open standards, why should
citizens? I will pursue this from local authorities up to the European
institutions."
"If public data such as maps, weather information and health advice is
not interoperable, how can it be exploited in new ways? And for such
reasons, I want to explore new ways to develop ICT standards in Europe."
The European Parliament votes on 26 January on whether Kroes gets the
job in charge of the digital agenda.
