Dear Madam/Sir,

the World Intellectual Property Organization is pleased to announce the org=
anization of the meeting "Meeting the Needs of the Visually Impaired Person=
s: What Challenges for IP?" that will be held at the International Conferen=
ce Centre Geneva (CICG) Geneva, on July 13, 2009 (from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.).

The proliferation of digital technologies has added a new dimension to the =
question of how to maintain a balance between the protection available to r=
ight owners, on the one hand, and the needs of specific user groups on the =
other hand. User groups which seek to benefit from reasonable exceptions an=
d limitations to copyright protection include more than 160 million blind o=
r visually impaired persons around the world.

The meeting will provide a forum for stakeholders to discuss, in practical =
terms, how the intellectual property system can best meet the needs of visu=
ally impaired people by improving timely access to copyright-protected cont=
ent.

The meeting will be immediately followed by the WIPO Conference on Intellec=
tual Property and Public Policy Issues which will be held on July 13 (start=
ing at 11 a.m.) and 14, 2009 to address issues relating to some of the majo=
r IP challenges facing the world today.
