Subject: Contrapunctus project

Dear Christopher Friend,

I am Elisa Ruzza, and I am working at my specialistic thesis in Musicology
at University of Padua, following the realization of a project developed by
Contrapunctus team.

The aim of the project is to define a Copyright application model,
concerning music texts accessible to visually impaired users, that could be
applied in an international context for web distribution.

The use of internet to achieve music scores - also from foreign Countries,
controlled by specific regulation, will make not only faster and cheaper,
but also easier for students, teachers and musicians to retrieve the texts
in the format they need, that often cannot be found in common music
libraries.

The first step in the project developement consists in defining the actual
Copyright application in different Countries of the world, focusing on
Europe. We are still gathering informations using an on-line questionnaire,
which has been already sent to 600 subjects including libraries, music
libraries, sound archives, publishers, Braille printing houses,
transcription services, and national blind associations. Up to now, we
received via internet almost 30 complete responses, and 15 partial
responses, mainly from U.S.A., U.K. and Canada.

The project has also been presented at Naples IAML Conference (July 2008),
where all participants have been invited to fill our questionnaire, and
will be also promoted in Geneva next august 15.

Since WBU promoted the "Right to Read" Campaign, which deals with the same
issues and problems found in retrieving and reading also music scores, I
think that your help could be precious for the distribution of our
questionnaire, for example -if possible- reporting a link to our survey in
the WBU web site.

If you are interested in further collaboration, your participation will be
appreciated also in helping to define the current situation about on-line
distribution of digital Braille music.

The results of this work will be finally available on Contrapunctus website
and newsletter.

Kind regards,

Elisa Ruzza
