Dear friends,

On Thursday, October 18, 2007 at the CBD Working Group on Article 8j in
Montreal, Canada, CIEL will present a panel on "Traditional Knowledge,
Folklore and Genetic Resources: Developments at WIPO and other multilateral
and regional fora". The issues of folklore, traditional knowledge, and
genetic resources are being discussed and addressed in multiple fora at
multiple levels. Indigenous and other local communities will be
particularly affected by the outcomes of these discussions and it is
important to ensure that developments in one forum do not negatively affect
progress in others. The Center for International Environmental Law is
presenting this update during the meeting of the Working Group on Article 8j
of the Convention on Biological Diversity as part of its work at cross-fora
capacity-building and information sharing aimed at ensuring coherent and
positive outcomes for indigenous and other local communities in multilateral
processes on traditional knowledge, folklore and genetic resources.

Speakers on the Panel will be: Valerie Etim (WIPO), Merle C. Alexander
(Kaska Dena Council), Dalindyebo Shabalala (CIEL) and Le'a Malia Kanehe
(Indigenous Peoples Council on Biocolonialism).

Please feel free to pass on to friends and colleagues.

Regards,

Dalindyebo Shabalala
