MEDIA ALERT - MEDIA ALERT - MEDIA ALERT - MEDIA ALERT
What: Press Conference with Thomas Vinje, ECIS Legal Counsel and
Spokesman
When: 10:30, Tuesday, 13 November
Where: Press Centre, Internet Governance Forum
Windsor Barra Hotel
Rio de Janeiro
Why: Since 1989 ECIS has campaigned across Europe in favour of
interoperability and open standards, key elements in the IGF's drive to
ensure openness and diversity in the internet. ECIS is however perhaps
best known for having been a driving force in support of the European
Commission's anti-trust case against and condemnation of Microsoft for
abuse of a dominant position, recently upheld by the European Court of
First Instance.
Thomas Vinje, ECIS Legal Counsel and Spokesman, is participating in the
second meeting of the IGF where he will for example take part in the
panel on "The Intersection of Open ICT Standards, Development, and
Public Policy". During the panel he will express ECIS's concerns that
the internet is coming under threat from Microsoft's closed standards
built on proprietary technologies. These concerns led ECIS in 2006 to
file a new complaint against Microsoft with the European Commission.
About ECIS
ECIS is an international non-profit association founded in 1989 that
strives to promote market conditions in the ICT sector allowing vigorous
competition on the merits and a diversity of consumer choice. ECIS has
actively represented its members on many issues related to
interoperability and competition before European, national and
international bodies, including the EU institutions and WIPO. ECIS'
members include large and smaller information and communications
technology hardware and software providers Adobe, Corel, IBM, Linspire,
Nokia, Opera, Oracle, RealNetworks, Red Hat, and Sun Microsystems.
