British Academy set to criticise UK copyright laws
United Kingdom
Wednesday 13th September
A report from the British Academy that is to be launched on the 18th Septem=
ber is expected to criticise the UK copyright system.
The Academy, which is the national academy for the humanities and the socia=
l sciences, will express fears that the copyright system may be impeding ra=
ther than stimulating the production of new ideas and new scholarships in t=
he humanities and social sciences sectors.
The report claims that it is the nature of creative activity and scholarshi=
p to build on what has gone before.
Under current UK law exemptions are provided from copyright, such as; purpo=
ses of private study and non-commercial research as well as criticism and r=
eview.
The report will also call on the government to clarify this situation. "The=
re is... little clarity about the precise scope of these exemptions, and an=
absence of case law," said John Kay, the chair of the Working Group which =
oversaw the review.
