Thanks, Jamie and Manon, for putting together this great meeting.
Thanks Ben and Marco, for making it happen.
I agree that it went very well. I was especially happy about the
music panel on which I had the sense of an emerging consensus over
the need for collective arrangements permitting and remunerating the
free circulation of musical works.
I'd like to clear up a possible misunderstanding about a remark I
made on the additional discussions panel and also in the suggestions
on ACS for the draft that unintentionally ended up on the mailinglist
serveral times. Pointing out a difference in experience in droit
d'auteur and copyright countries with regard to levied exceptions and
collecting societies was, of course, not intended to create a divide.
For other aspects of copyright law, e.g. DRMs, the difference
probably doesn't matter, but in case of collective management, it
seems to preconfigure to a degree what seems plausible and doable
against these traditions. Hence a tendency toward private, voluntary
arrangements in the US, and a tendency towards collective, public
arrangements by law in continental Europe, Canada etc.
For the high-level principles these differences are probably
irrelevant as long as they are open enough to allow both strategies.
For the more detailled version of the Accord they might be more
relevant, though.
And yes, at the Wizards of OS, 14-16 September 2006 in Berlin, I can
confirm that there will be a panel under the working title "Paris
Accord: The Global License." We can also provide space for a one-day
workshop on Sunday September 17, where we can continue our
discussions on the Paris Accord.
