or perhaps stop the sentence after "without an expectation of economic
rewards"?
After all, software produced and financed on the "adware" model
definitely returns economic rewards, but not from sale or licensing of
the code.
I would delete "standards and protocols" from this sentence too - it has
been a VERY long time since anyone made a significant amount of money
from licensing a standard or a protocol, AFAIK.
(the money garnered by the ITU printing office is peanuts)
So I'd suggest:
4. Some high quality software products, standards and protocols can
and will
be produced without regard to ownership or control of software code,
or any
expectation of remuneration or other pecuniary reward from the sale or
licensing of the code.
On the other hand, some important software products are unlikely to
be produced
without an expectation of economic rewards.
