One does not always control the direction of technologies,
particularly given the interest of some to exercise control over (and
surviellence of) the distribution of knowledge goods. Just look at
how lock+key DRM technologies are being designed to eliminate the
practical ability to use normal copyright limitations and
exceptions. "If you build it" you should not assume everyone will
want to implement with good intentions.
I live in a country where the federal government is mining telephone,
ISP, library and other records to determine who our circle of friends
are, and what our values are.
