Thai activists respond to US policy on AIDS drugs
By David Brunnstrom
BANGKOK, Dec 16 (Reuters) - Medical activists are urging Thailand to take a
stand against multinational pharmaceutical companies by licensing the local
manufacture of the antiretroviral drug didanosine (ddI), which could help
hundreds of thousands live longer if it were affordable.
Following a statement made by US President Bill Clinton, in which he said
that Washington would alter trade policy to support greater worldwide
access to life-saving medicines, the activists say Bangkok should be
emboldened to take the unprecedented step of manufacturing ddI.
