July 22 hearing
This morning I received a fax from Representative John
Mica, the Chair of the House Subcommittee on Criminal
Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources, of the Committee
on Government Reform.
His letter says that he is dedicated to protecting
public health and promoting sound trade policies.
I am invited to testify at a hearing on July 22, 1999,
at 10am, in 2247 Rayburn House Office Building.
His subcommittee staff for the hearings are Sharon
Pinkerton and Steve Dillingham, at 202.225.2577.
Testimony must be filed by Monday, July 19.
The hearing will examine the United States Role
in combating the global HIV/AIDS epidemic, and policies
and program that are being pursued internationally.
Other topics include, (1) what is the status
of vaccine research? (2) What are the treatment
challenges and costs? Are pharmaceutical
companies critical to this effort? (3)
What international approaches to treatment are promising?
I don't know who else will be testifying, except that
I heard that Representative Jessie Jackson, Jr., and
Chatinkha Nkhoma will be invited.
I will post any info regarding witnesses.
-------------------
In my opinion, it would be useful for others to provide
a letter or a fax to the committee regarding views, and
ask that the information be included in the hearing record
and put on the hearing web page. People should
contact the subcommittee staff about this. Also, if anyone
wants to testify, now would be the time to contact the
subcommittee.
