Re: Off Topic: Basic Assumptions
SAN FRANCISCO (CNN) -- A timber company has rejected a $480
million proposal to save the ancient Headwaters Forest, the world's
largest remaining grove of privately owned redwoods in Northern
California.
Some of the trees in the majestic groves 250 miles north of San
Francisco are 1,500 years old.
The Headwaters Forest has pitted environmentalists against Texas
financier Charles Hurwitz, who controls Pacific Lumber through his
Houston-based Maxxam Corp.
Hurwitz purchased Pacific Lumber in 1985. Logging increased under
his ownership, prompting several protests.
