Off Topic: Margaret's Experience at DEC
Margaret;
I didn't mention it in my last post but thank you for sharing your
experience at DEC. All three of us business partners in our little business
left such companies for those kinds of reasons, in part. (The other big,
but related, motivator was our desire to set up a company that would be
like "what we always wanted" when we worked for other people. A company
that was RATIONAL and FAIR in its treatment of employees, and that really
valued their input and TRUSTED them. Starting a business hasn't been easy,
but I think we are succeeding this time around. And, I can't believe how
motivated our wonderful employees are. Fortunately, we are FINALLY getting
the details worked out on employee ownership, so they will soon be
"business partners" in a meaningful sense, and not just "employees.") At
any rate, what we see going on in a lot of big companies is insane. There's
no other word for it. Indeed, Dilbert has almost created a cottage industry
around that insanity! And, I think it IS an important part of the reason
for DEC's demise. The same is true of a former company I used to work for,
with VERY similar stories...one Control Data Corporation. It was amazing
(and depressing) to watch.
Take care.
