                         [About CAC]

The Citizen Advocacy Center (CAC) is a unique
training and support program for public members
serving on health care regulatory agencies, governing boards
and advisory bodies as representatives of the consumer
interest. Public members are typically in the minority and
are usually without the resources and technical support
available to their counterparts from professional and
 business communities. CAC is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3)
organization created to serve the public interest by
providing research, training, technical support, and
networking opportunities to help public members make their
 contributions informed, effective, and significant.

CAC offers a quarterly publication entitled Citizen Advocacy
News & Views, convenes conferences and produces research
reports on public policy issues and topics of current and
practical concern to board members, holds an annual
conference in early November, and conducts specially tailored
training seminars for states, regulatory bodies, and others.
Recent conferences and publications have addressed The
Regulatory Management of Chemically Dependent Health Care
 Practitioners, Continuing Professional Competence, and
Mandatory Reporting of Hospital Actions Affecting
 Practitioner Practicing Privileges.

While CAC was created to maximize the leverage of public
members, our services and publications are available to and
valued by all members of health care regulatory and governing
boards and by the executives and attorneys who staff these
institutions. CAC has been commended for avoiding propaganda
and partisan politics in the examination of issues and for
not casting public members in an adversarial role vis a vis
 their professional counterparts.

CACıs Board of Directors are people from diverse backgrounds,
all of whom have substantial experience in licensure,
regulation, and governance in the health care field. In
addition, CAC has assembled panels of experts who provide CAC
 with advice and counsel.

CAC is the proud recipient of three major awards. In 1993,
CAC was honored by the Council on Licensure, Enforcement and
Regulation with the CLEAR Program Award. Also in 1993, the
Administrators in Medicine, an organization comprised of the
executive directors of state medical boards, presented its
Executive Directorıs Award to CAC for ³outstanding service in
the protection of the public through the promotion of
effective Medical Boards.² In 1994, CAC received the Health
 Care Financing Administrationıs Beneficiary Services
 Certificate of Merit.
