Turkish alcohol, tobacco monopoly hikes prices
by Reuters [WN] via NewsEdge
ISTANBUL, Reuters [WN] via NewsEdge Corporation : Turkey's state alcohol
and tobacco monopoly Tekel has raised prices by an average 44 percent in
line with new tax measures, effective from Monday, Anatolian news agency
reported.
Tekel raised the prices of Maltepe and Samsun brand cigarettes by some 80
percent and the price of the aniseed spirit Raki was increased by around
40 percent.
The tax measures, ranging from value-added to withholding taxes, are part
of government plans to raise budget revenues in 2000 to secure financial
backing from the International Monetary Fund.
The price increases also reflect high inflation. Annual consumer price
inflation stood at 64.6 percent in November. ((Istanbul newsroom,
