The state-owned Thailand Tobacco Monopoly (TTM) will cut prices for local
cigarettes in an attempt to regain market share from imported brands, says
its managing director, Gen Ong-ard Champoonta.

Despite the recent excise tax increase on cigarettes to 71.5% from 70%,
retail prices for imported cigarettes have remained unchanged, the TTM and
anti-tobacco lobbyists have complained. Philip Morris is selling its L&M
brand at 29 baht a pack.

Gen Ong-ard said the TTM would cut the price of its leading Krongthip
brand by one baht to 30 baht a pack.

The monopoly had earlier won approval from the Finance Ministry to raise
Krongthip prices to 31 baht from 29. But executives later decided that the
increase would hurt margins of sales agents.

The TTM plans to compensate agents for transport costs. Overall, the
monopoly's sales margin would fall to 2.3 baht per pack from 2.5 baht.

The tobacco monopoly currently commands a market share of 88%.
