TAIPEI -- The Taiwan Legislature passed on Friday the third reading of the
Alcohol & Tobacco Law that lays the groundwork for the eventual end to the
government's monopoly on the production of those products.

The various statutes included in the Alcohol & Tobacco Law will become
effective when Taiwan is admitted into the World Trade Organization, said
Wang Rong-jou, a vice finance minister.

Taiwan is hoping it will be admitted into the world trade organization at
the end of this year.

After Taiwan is admitted, the law will become effective, said Wang.

Taiwan currently allows the importation of alcoholic beverages and tobacco
products but still maintains a monopoly on the domestic production of such
products.
