British American Tobacco To Sell Rothmans Cdn Ops

OTTAWA -- British American Tobacco PLC has agreed to sell the Canadian
division of Rothmans International BV as part of its proposed merger with
the tobacco firm, the Canadian Competition Bureau said. 

The bureau said the sale aims to resolve concerns that the merger would
likely lead to a substantial lessening or prevention of competition in the
manufactured cigarette and fine cut tobacco markets in Canada. 

The Competition Bureau said it has filed a consent order with the
Competition Tribunal to ensure that the sale by BAT of the Canadian
operation of Rothmans will take place within one year of the BAT-Rothmans
merger closing. BAT is a British-based tobacco company.
