I thought I'd share with the list news of a proposal by
Global Energy, Inc. to build an unusual 500 MW electric power
plant in Lima OH.
This plant (or research on it) is apparently being partially funded by
DOE and will involve both coal and municipal solid waste
gasification and the use of this gas to fuel combined
cycle turbines.
Although many environmentally beneficial claims are being
made for this technology by the sponsors, the technology
involves production of large amounts of hydrogen sulfide
and carbonyl sulfide from the gasifier followed by sulfur
recovery units similar to what is used in the refining industry.
Apparently a similar gasifier is working in Indiana on a Wabash
river power plant. The applicant is also seeking permits for
a similar unit in Kentucky.
Although the sponsors claim the gasification process is a sealed
technology, emergency releases from this process could be substantial
(gasifier operates at 400 atmospheres of pressure). The
sponsors and DOE appear to be totally silent on mercury emissions
from the facility which will have to come out of the process somewhere
(probably in the gas burned by the combined cycle turbine).
If anyone has any additional information about operational practices
of such current generation goal gasification plants in Indiana, Kentucky
or elsewhere, would
you please pass this information on to me? Thanks.
