Massive incinerator planned in China; and NEWARK, NJ

Not to be outdone, the Newark, NJ, municipal waste incinerator
has been given clearance to expand its hours to burn 3,000 tpd
in order to handle the atrocious amount NY City generates. It is
7 miles upwind of the Big Apple, which has banned incineration
within its city limits. Previously it burned 1,500 tpd.
China shares with NY the only two manmade objects clearly visible
to the astronauts, the Great Wall and the NY City Fresh Kills garbage
dump now being closed on Staten Island. Unfortunately half the
Fresh Kills loads are now coming to Newark's incinerator and half to
Elizabeth, NJ, to its waste transfer station in a poor minority
neighborhood, on the way to landfills in PA and VA.

"A 1,000 to 1,500 tpd municipal waste incinerator is in the works for
Shanghai.

The Shanghai Jiangquiao incinerator will cost around $86 million. The
incinerator will use technology from Spain, and will be completed in 2002.
It will be sited in the Jiading suburb of Shanghai.
