Re: Minnesota incinerators . . .

In its draft document, "Waste Management in Minnesota: A Transition to the 21st Century, Draft Policy Discussion and Proposals," the Minnesota Office of Environmental Assistance is recommending a state goal that "no MSW [municipal solid waste] shall be disposed of [in landfills] after 2006." This is very contentious and many people are asking what they mean by "no MSW." DOes it mean no solid waste that has not already had all the recyclables or compostables extracted? As stated, it certainly does not address the ash residue from burning MSW, but we don't know how that fits in w/ the definition. THere are a lot of questions to be asked -- and hopefull answered -- in teh final report that will go to the MN state legislature. And then of course, what our governor will do, one never knows. :-)

Does anyone have any info about Minnesota currently closing its landfills and building trash burners? It was part of the 'waste party line' at a meeting this evening. Thanks for any help. Jackie
