Re: Activated carbon stream good for mercury control

Joe,

The carbon injection does work to reduce flue emissions of mercury but only
by capturing and introducing it to the fly ash. Ellen Connett told me that
some of the resulting mercury then volatilizes (goes airborne as a gas) from
the ash because of its finely dispersed condition. Enhanced pollution
controls aren't really doing the great public health service that people
assume.

Everything else that controls capture can be found in ash too like dioxins
etc. This is the biggest reason that using ash isn't such a cool idea. It is
a huge irony that the EPA has mandated APC s and ignored the "benificial
reuse" of ash as a public health threat.
