Military incinerator
SOUTH AFRICAN ARMS COMPANY DENEL TO
DEVELOP AN INCINERATOR FOR DESTRUCTION
OF MILITARY WASTE IN BLACK NEIGHBOURHOOD
The above operation is presently being scoped by consultants in South
Africa. The background documents state that there will be no
SIGNIFICANT IMPACT on the health of the people and the
environment. This incinerator is to be established in Cape Town.
The incinerator will be flanked on three sides by black residential
areas. They plan to incinerate the following:
- explosive waste produced during manufacturing;
- coloured smoke and irritant gases;
- dry, moist and liquid reagents in various stages of production;
- live and spent propellant, energetic andpyrotechnic products;
- packaging materials including cardboard, plastics and papr;
- metal compounds;
- protective equipment that cannot be contaminated.
This process sounds that it is open to the abuse, for there is not
clear specifics about how much and what exactly will be incinerated.
Does anyone know of alternatives to the military incineration,
or of other such plants world wide. This is the first time that
something of this nature has cropped up in SA.
Thank you,
Bobby
