1) How established is the link between dioxin and endometriosis? Should it
be referred to as a "probable" link or are we more confident than that?
Suggest you check references to Rachels #463

2) How are dioxins formed when bleaching paper products and tampons? Are
there dioxins contaminating the bleaches themselves or are dioxins formed
in the bleaching process? I understand that dioxins are formed in
temperature ranges around 400-750 degrees Fahrenheit (200-400 Celcius).
Does the bleaching process get to that temperature range or are dioxins
formed some other way?
Chlorine is "recycled" in to combustion
zones.
The caustic chemical loop passes:
1. digesters
2. washers-bleaching units.
3. evaporators
4. recovery boiler
5. lime kiln
Some of the fiber (carbon) makes its way
to the recovery section (steps 3,4,5 etc)
Most of the fiber, but not all exits at the
washers separate from the caustic but
caustic goes through recovery (steps 3,4,5
etc above) and IS REINTRODUCED AT
THE DIGESTERS WITH DIOXIN CONTAMINATION.
How?
Recycled fiber
There are also interconnected water loops
throughout a paper mill. The water has
fine fibers and chemicals and must be cleaned
up and part recycled.
Chlorine is introduced in the bleaching section
and for killing slime-bacteria (along with other
nasties including metals) and can be "recycled"
into the recovery boilers and lime kilns where
the temperatures are high and air-
oxygen is introduced for combustion.
As the mixtures cool, dioxin is formed.
VaLa, you have competed the dioxin "fire triangle"
Chlorine

. . . . . .
Carbon Oxygen
In presence of metals for catalyzation
and elevated temperatures that cool
through the range where dioxin is formed
and gases pass out exhaust system
and a mixture of organics and water
condense out. Also caustic recycled
out of recovery boilers and evaporators
can have dissolved Cl and O2....on its
way back to the digesters.
Almost all paper mills in Europe use
ozone-peroxide for bleaching.
