     Welcome to the list.

     Dioxin is formed in incinerators in the ash and in the exhaust stack,
by recombination of chlorine - primarily from organochlorine compounds and
especially from PVC plastic - with aromatic (benzene) carbon. What your
friend said is true. Combustion is responsible for a very large percentage
of the airborne dioxin in the world.

       There are many sources you can start with for learning more about
this. I have a few on my website - http://www.cqs.com/egeneral.htm and
scroll down to dioxin section, and there is a very readable book about it
called Dying From Dioxin by Lois Gibbs, published by South End Press.

       If you have any other questions (and I'm sure you will) some of the
foremost dioxin experts in the country are members of this list and can
answer them.
