Revised Standards for Hazardous Waste Combustors Final Rule
The following is an update from the RCRA, Superfund & EPCRA Hotline.
On Friday July 30, 1999, EPA Administrator Carol Browner signed the
Hazardous Waste Combustion (HWC) Maximum Achievable Control
Technology (MACT) final rule. This rule will further reduce exposure to
hazardous air pollutants by establishing nationwide emissions standards
under the Clean Air Act for hazardous waste burning incinerators,
cement kilns, and lightweight aggregate kilns. The MACT standards will
limit future emissions of several hazardous air pollutants, including
dioxins and furans, mercury, and other heavy metals.
A prepublication copy of the signature preamble and regulations, the
Agency's press release, a fact sheet on the rule, and a Frequently
Asked Question (FAQ) document are available for viewing and
downloading on the Hazardous Waste Combustion MACT Webpage at
the following Internet address:
http://www.epa.gov/hwcmact
In September, EPA will hold a Workshop on the rule in Washington, D.C.
Details will be announced soon on the Hazardous Waste Combustion
MACT Webpage.
The background documents that support the MACT rule will be posted on
the Webpage by August 13, 1999.
For more information on the MACT rule, you may contact the RCRA
Hotline at (800) 424-9346 or (703) 412-9810.
