Seeing quotations reflective of 1998, I happened to hear one recently in an
unlikely source that struck me as characterizing the attitude of Microsoft
as a company, a few of its executives personally, and not a few ambitious
capitalists:
"I've worked hard and I've become rich, friendless, mean. In America,
that's about as far as a man can go."
-- The character Horace Vandergelder in "Hello, Dolly." He was now ready
to move onto a new challenge - marriage.
