Bulgarian Lawmakers Agree To
Ban Tobacco Broadcast Ads
Dow Jones Newswires
SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP)--The Bulgarian parliament
agreed Wednesday on a draft resolution banning
tobacco from radio and television, including cigarette
commercials and indirect advertising such as
sponsorships of sports events.
The ban is part of rules restricting the advertising of
alcohol and other addictive substances on broadcast
media.
It is part of a law on radio and television expected to be
completed and passed by parliament later this year.
Passage is a virtual certainty, considering government
parties hold the majority of seats in the legislature.
The law prohibits alcohol advertising that addresses
adolescents or that claims that the product can solve
personal problems.
