Canada To Ban Tobacco Sponsorships
Canadian Health Minister Allan Rock introduced legislation
yesterday that would restrict tobacco sponsorship of sporting
and cultural events in two years and eliminate them in five
years. Health groups and opposition politicians are
disappointed, however, because the government's original plan
was to restrict tobacco sponsorships beginning in October of
this year. David Sweanor, a lawyer for the Canadian
Non-Smokers' Rights Association, called the measure "a backward
step" for Canadian health policy. The proposal represents a
compromise between the government and cultural and sport
organizers who argued that they needed more time to find
alternative sponsorships.
