Hearings Begin In Japanese Lawsuit Against PM

Hearings in a lawsuit against Philip Morris will start Thursday
in Nagoya, Japan. Twenty plaintiffs seek restitution from the
tobacco company for smoking-related pain and discomfort. The
plaintiffs believe Philip Morris were remiss in selling
cigarettes in Japan despite their knowledge about the health
risks of smoking. Plaintiffs' lawyer Shizuo Ito, a lawyer
representing the plaintiffs, noted that cigarettes in Japan
don't carry health warnings, and as a result "people aren't
properly informed even though US tobacco companies are well
aware of the health risks."
