Members Of Congress Push To Restrict Tobacco Marketing Overseas
Some members of Congress are planning to propose legislation
that would restrict current tobacco marketing practices
overseas, such as putting cigarette logos on merchandise and
holding events aimed at children. Lawmakers cited a recent
report by tobacco control group INFACT, which reported that
tobacco companies are circumventing other countries'
advertising restsrictions. The legislation would also ban US
funds for the promotion of tobacco exports. RJR spokeswoman Jan
Smith responded by stating, "[W]e cannot make laws for other
countries."
