Editorial: Sponsorship Gets A Boost (TOBACCO INTERNATIONAL)
An editorial in tobacco industry publication TOBACCO
INTERNATIONAL discusses the "good news" from Canada, where
Ottawa is considering amending its law to allow more tobacco
sponsorship of sporting events: "The sponsorship amendments
will have their detractors, of course. But the truth is that
there has been some significant movement away from the outright
banning of tobacco advertising -- and that's encouraging. In
Canada, big-time events such as the Canadian Open tennis
tournament and the Montreal Grand Prix could face extinction
with the loss of revenue traditionally drawn from tobacco
promotions. Perhaps more government officials in more nations
will take a cue from the Canadians and enact more sensible, and
less hysterical, legislation regarding the advertising of
cigarettes and related products."
