Georgia-Pacific Announces New Health Smart(TM) Initiative
Consumers Access Free Information About Maintaining Healthy Home Environments
ATLANTA, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Are you Health Smart? Did you know that
laboratory tests
show that wiping a rinsed apple with a paper towel or napkin can
significantly help to remove
potentially harmful germs? Or that after handwashing, it is more sanitary
to dry your hands
with a paper towel than a dish towel? Consumers can now learn many ways to
help improve
personal and family hygiene practices through the new Georgia-Pacific
Health Smart Institute
and Health Smart(TM) educational campaign announced today by
Georgia-Pacific, the maker of
Sparkle(R), Coronet(R), Angel Soft(R) and MD(R) paper products. Free
educational tips on how to
help maintain a healthy home environment are available through a variety of
innovative
information sources including printed materials, a toll-free hotline, a Web
site, product
packaging featuring the Health Smart(TM) seal and a national elementary
school educational
program.
The G-P Health Smart Institute is a new initiative dedicated to evaluating
and facilitating
ways to improve personal and family hygiene practices, including the use of
disposable paper
products, such as paper towels, toilet paper and paper napkins. The
extensive G-P Health
Smart(TM) consumer education campaign is guided in part by the Institute's
Advisory Board,
which is composed of five leading health experts representing the fields of
hygiene, infectious
diseases, infection prevention and control, foodborne pathogens and
microbiology.
``My family's health has always been very important to me, as it is for
every mom. I'm
concerned about germs in the home and the many ways that they can infect my
family and me if
we're not careful,'' said Catherine Hicks, who plays Annie Camden, on the
WB Network's 7th
Heaven. Ms. Hicks serves as spokesperson for the launch of the G-P Health
Smart(TM) consumer
education campaign. ``The Georgia-Pacific Health Smart program is valuable
for everyone
because it teaches easy ways we can help protect ourselves against harmful
germs and prevent
illness.''
Through a new toll-free hotline (1-877-GPCLEAN) and Web site
(http://www.gp.com/healthsmart), consumers can order the free educational
brochure, Are You
Health Smart? A Guide to Maintaining a Healthy Home Environment. Also
available are G-P
Health Smart(TM) tip sheets that include easy-to-follow pointers on topics
such as how to
help avoid foodborne illnesses, prevent yeast infections and potty train
young children. On the
Web site, consumers can test their knowledge about common germs through an
online Health
Smart(TM) Awareness Challenge, identify germ hot spots in the site's
``virtual home'' and
access results of a national survey on American's hygiene practices.
In a Health Smart(TM) elementary school education campaign starting this
fall, first grade
children will learn about proper hygiene through a new Georgia-Pacific
Health Smart(TM)
program in conjunction with Scholastic Inc. Through distribution of free
teaching guides,
classroom posters and take-home lessons to 25,000 teachers in schools
nationwide, the
program will help educate almost one million first grade children and their
families on how to
help create a healthy environment at school and at home.
``There are easy habits that consumers can adopt to improve hygiene
practices and help prevent
illness, including the use of disposable paper products,'' said Michael
Burandt, senior vice
president, Packaged Products, Georgia-Pacific. ``The G-P Health Smart
Institute is an
initiative to assess effective ways of reducing germ transmission and share
such information
with consumers through an intensive education campaign. Health Smart is one
of the most
significant programs the company has undertaken in recent years with
respect to health and
hygiene.''
The G-P Health Smart Advisory Board helped develop a White Paper that
reviews scientific
research and literature and presents recommendations for reducing germ
transmission in the
home. Both excerpts from this White Paper and an ``Advice From The
Experts'' column will be
featured on the Health Smart(TM) Web site.
Georgia-Pacific is one of the world's leading manufacturers and
distributors of pulp, paper and
building products, and employs approximately 47,000 people at more than 400
facilities. The
company manages more than six million acres of timberlands in the United
States and Canada.
Its consumer products include Sparkle(R) paper towels and napkins;
Coronet(R) paper towels,
paper napkins and toilet paper; Angel Soft(R) bath tissue; and MD(R) bath
tissue.

STREAMING VIDEO: New Report On
Improving Hygiene Practices At Home
Released, Includes Ways To Reduce
Germs On Fruits And Vegetables
--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 16, 1998--
An advisory board of health experts is recommending simple tips to help
prevent the spread of
germs in kitchens and on foods, such as apples -- popular during this season.
Through the Georgia-Pacific Health Smart program, people are being
encouraged to use the
disposable towels as an easy, effective way to avoid cross-contamination of
foods and kitchen
surfaces. Lab tests show that rinsing an apple with water removes
approximately 75 percent
of contaminating germs, whereas rinsing and drying with a paper product can
remove up to 99
percent of the germs -- that's significantly more germs than just rinsing
alone. The G-P Health
Smart Campaign hopes to educate nearly a million first grade students on
the importance of
proper hygiene through partnerships with Scholastic and the National School
Nurses
Association. Watch streaming video which looks at the Health Smart program at
