Global Energy
Does anybody know anything about a US Company called Global Energy.
Apparently they describe themselves as "A Founder Director Company of
the Washington-based Gassification Technologies Council".
They have set up a subsidiary called Fife Electric (Fife is a County in
Scotland). They have asked for permission to build a 410MW Gas/Coal/and
Waste Electricity Plant. It will be powered 45% (by energy) by gas. But
it will burn 310,000 tonnes of coal and 390,000 tonnes of waste (per
year I think).
So there are environmental problems with this on two scores -
incinerating waste, and burning coal, which is the worst for carbon
dioxide emissions. Scotland has the best climates in Europe for wind and
wave power, so this is a crazy scheme. Unfortunately it may get
somewhere because UK coal miners have had rather a hard time lately (for
all sorts of free market reasons rather than environmental ones).
Fife Electric describe it as "the most energy efficient and clean coal
plant in the world". But even gas, of course would produce less CO2. And
you all know the arguments about waste incineration.
