EPA further acknowleges VC & PCE leach from hard PVC
EPA's recent final rule, ' Ntl Primary Drinking Water Stnds, Consumer
Confidence Reports' (40CFR141 & 142, F.R. 19 Aug '98 p. 44,511-36, Water
Docket # W-97-18), lists the sources of drinking water contaminants in
Appendix B to Suppart O. Two (#'s 68 & 75) are listed as coming from (i.e.
leaching from) PVC pipe (i.e hard, not plasticized): tetrachloroethene &
vinyl chloride. This is the rule implementing SDWA96 requirement that
consumers be informed of contaminats detected at any level in their public
water supply, and be told of their lkely source & their main health effect,
most often a chronic one. Interestingly, turns out the act gave EPA
residual authority to list the same info for up to 3 more contaminats (per
water bill, I guess) that were not detected.
