Re:triclosan

I'm receiving a number of inquires regarding the anitmicrobal Triclosan and
its possible risks. The concern is not over Triclosan itself , but rather over
the trace impurities which can from as unwanted synthesis and manufacturing
by-products. Depending on the manufacturing synthesis pathways used as well as
the type of equipment used several different dioxins and dibenzofurans may be
formed as product contaminants. These include 2,3,7,8-TCDD & 2,3,7,8-TCDF.

A number of small manufactures located in third world countries have begun
manufacturing and distributing Tricolsan which is find its way into the U.S.
consumer market. Their testing of the Tricolsan should be of concern. These
manufacturers are employing GC-ECD analytical techniques to measure and
identify the levels of dioxins and dibenzofurans in their product.
Unfortunately, this antiquated technique, when compared to HRGG/MS using SIM,
is prone to false negatives. The approved method for monitoring Triclosan,
which is regulated as an OTC drug by the FDA, is using HRGC/MS SIM as detailed
by the USP.
