>HEADLINE: LDP Makes Emergency Report on Environmental Hormones - Calls for
>Increased Spending into Basic Research
BODY: Based on deliberations by six government agencies and ministries,
including the Environmental Agency, the Ministry of Health and Welfare,
and the Ministry of International Trade and Finance, among others, Japan's
ruling Liberal Democratic Party has issued an urgent report regarding the
so-called " environmental hormone" problem, which threatens to harm the
reproductive functions of biological organisms. The report urges active
efforts toward the solution of this issue through the formulation of a
supplementary budget this year which is to include the establishment of a
system for basic research, an emergency survey of the current status of
environmental hormone pollution, and an uncovering of the mechanism by which
the hormones affect the environment.
>One of the proposals in the report with regard to the establishment of a
research system is the formation by the Environmental Agency of facilities
attached to the National Institute for Environmental Studies which will
serve as the core organization in Japan for environmental hormone
research. Ref: Japan Industrial Journal, 04/16/98, p.2
