hi louise, sorry I missed this for a few days.  I'm sure others can add
more to this INCOMPLETE sketch, which has no cites to studies--sorry:

mid-1960's:  "[U.S.] govt study conducted by Bionetics labs revealed that
dioxin contaminated componennts of Agent Orange & other military
defoiliants caused severe birth defects in the offspring of exposed
animals.  the Bionetics report came to light in 1969, compounding reports
of birth defects  & other reprod. damage in Vietnamese populations exposed
to Agent Orange.  Public & scientific outrrage, coupled w/ congressional
hearings..forced ban ...in 1970."  Carol vanStrum, 'Back to the Future:
EPA Reinvents...', _Synthesis/Generation_ #7/8 summer '95 p. 35.  Ntl
Acdemy of Sciences issued a report (their 1st?) in '74,  "..contain[s]
considerable information about the effects..".  ('Toxic cloud over Seveso',
_Nature_ 262:636-7 (19 Aug '76)).

1950's & '60's:  Dow & Monsanto aware of 2,4,5-T's & dioxin's effects.
e.g. both were tracking exposedworkers by the 1950's.  e.g. in 1965, Dow &
V K Rowe experiments on prisoners in Holmsberg Prison, PA (pure dioxin put
on skin, dose increased dramatically by Dr Klingman w./out Dow's
