Re: APL-WALMART (fwd)
Here's a follow up to the post of several minutes ago that
pinpoints the way in which one big retailer can crimp the other by
monopolizing shipping and land transportation resources.

Mr. Staples,
I would not call that a sketch of a story at all. I'm still amazed at how
few people knew about the import slot-chartering this last "Christmas rush"
import season. Apparently even the JOC missed the boat (pun intended) or
was paid hush money (maybe that's how they stay in business)....;)
Hopefully both my sources and memory are correct.......Dayton Hudson
(Target Stores) and K-Mart, jointly slot chartered an ENTIRE Cho Yang
vessel this last holiday season. Part of the deal was that all the
containers were to trans-load in Los Angeles, so the carrier could
reposition the equipment and vessel as soon as possible. Needless to say,
this put a strain on both trucking and warehouse capacity in Los Angeles
for a brief period.
Apparently Wal-Mart missed the boat too (pun intended), and wants some
insurance that they are not shut out again like last year. I've not heard
about the Wal-Mart deal with APL. I'm sure APL is not too happy about
missing the boat either, and is out to secure the next largest importer.
Will check my sources.
Respectfully,
John Gravel
